  • Winooski River Bridge - Winooski

    My wife was the victim of a hit and run on Friday, 8/25, while on the Winooski River bridge during her bike commute home from work. The car hit her from behind. The driver never stopped, and my wife landed on the road and in the emergency room with multiple injuries. She is a medical professional and will likely be out of work for the foreseeable future as her job is physically demanding (i.e., ironically, having to lift, support, and transfer patients as a physical therapist)

    I know there is a long-term multi-year project to replace the bridge and address the long-known safety concerns. Still, something must be done in the meantime to slow down drivers and reduce these incidents—perhaps more signage, public service announcements, cameras, something, anything.

    For years there has been a major drainage issue that floods the sidewalk in front of Hulbert Supply and USPS on Pine Street As the seasons change the pedestrian experience goes from ankle deep brown water, to slush, to a sheet of ice The ice hazard often extends out into the road all winter, so there is no way around it on foot without going into traffic People with wheelchairs, disabilities, bikes, and on foot with kids/strollers, use the Pine Street sidewalk daily Can this issue be addressed by either the city or the nearby businesses?     I have not included a photo to respect the privacy of the people using City Hall Park as their home. This morning the park contains multiple tents/tarps, sleeping bags, and clothes covering the benches. There is also trash on the ground, seating areas, and sidewalks.

    Burlington Code of Ordinances
    22-7 Camping in parks prohibited.

    (a) It shall be unlawful for any person to camp in any public park in the city unless otherwise authorized by this code. Camping may occur at public areas designated as campsites by the parks and recreation department.

    (b) The term "to camp" shall include the placing of any bedding, sleeping bag or other material at a site to serve as a sleeping area; the placing of any tent, lean-to, other structure or vehicle at a site to serve as a sleeping or living area; or the use of any public park for sleeping between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.
