Another opinion.. This greenbelt and a few others close to the downtown and adjacent to high turnover parallel parking gets too much foot traffic to sustain grass. I think the solution would be to fill the areas between curb and side walk with pavers leaving a planter space for the trees. This would be costly but if done correctly would work and look more attractive.

I would strongly suggest some sort of planting to add vitality to the environment. If mowing or lack of enough sun for grass is the issue, how about a ground cover? Lamium? To protect it from foot traffic from parked cars, install little paver paths between the sidewalk & curb every 10 feet or so.
