The NE button switch actuator was damaged, evidence of the button being banged on. Replaced the damaged part. Also repaired the SE button. The switch carrier was knocked off one of its mounting screws, again a sign that the button was being beaten on. Made a repair to get it operational. Some people treat these large round surfaces as something to beat on. While driving home one night I watched a father kick one with his young son watching. Started to roll down my window to say something but figured it would be a waste of time. Years ago Burlington had buttons that were very reliable and easy to press. A rubber membrane was pressed to activate a micro switch on the other side. The membrane was protected by a short "tunnel" about an inch in diameter. Was approached by UVM about a student that could not make this style of button work. Was very surprised to hear of any difficulty with this easy to press button. Apparently the student had some paralysis that prevented him from being able to put a gloved finger into the tunnel to press the switch. The large two-inch "mushroom" style actuators were starting to be offered at the time, and I ordered our first set to replace the buttons at the University Heights crossing. Over the years the remaining buttons in Burlington were replaced as time and money allowed. What we did early as a pro-active step is now required by ADA rules. Interestingly, the two-inch mushroom style actuators use the same micro switch as the earlier, easy to push rubber membrane type. It takes only a very light press to click the switch. Banging on it is not necessary and does not make the light change quicker. Banging on it to the point of breaking it will delay you and others indefinitely. If you don't want to be delayed, don't bang on it. The Department of Public Works has resolved this request. Thanks for helping to keep Burlington a great place to live and work.
