Here is a link to information on initiating traffic calming on your street. https://www.burlingtonvt.gov/DPW/Traffic-Calming-Neighborhood-Enhancement-Program. Currently, traffic calming in Burlington is initiated by residents. At least 1/3 of the affected street or neighborhood needs to be interested in traffic calming, which is demonstrated through a neighborhood petition. The template is available on the website. Once a petition is received, it enters the project queue. The DPW manages an average of 4 traffic calming projects at any one time and new projects are advanced in the order they are received. The process generally takes a minimum of 2 years and up to 4 years to complete, while the City balances staff to manage projects and budgets to install traffic calming.
In regards to your signage suggestion. We do not recommend the use of “Children at Play” signage due to data that has been collected. Such signs may cause drivers to slow down in the short term, but over time, motorists will tend to ignore the sign and, as a result, the sign will lose its effectiveness. Additionally, special needs signage can send a false sense of security to parents and children. Giving them the sense motorists are going to watch out for them when there's a likelihood they won't. Thank you for inquiring about traffic calming. We took some time to update our traffic calming program but are now working our way through our old requests.

We'll follow up with more information once we've completed our review of traffic and crash data, which will occur during this coming winter. The traffic calming program is very popular and there is a queue of streets ahead of this request, but we will use the winter months to develop any improvement plans for the coming year.
